Whiteflies are a common pest to Florida residents. Ornamentals and citrus plants or trees are favorable targets to the Citrus and Silverleaf (also known as Sweetpotato) whiteflies. Citrus Whiteflies are highly attracted to citrus, gardenia, ash, ficus, and pomegranate plants/trees.  Silverleaf whiteflies favor most ornamentals in South Florida. Not until 1986 did many different species of the whitefly become discovered in Florida. Whiteflies have become a widespread nuisance among farmers and homeowners due to the death of their crops, trees, shrubs and gardens. A more serious problem is presented if the whiteflies are infected with specific diseases that spread among the trees, ornamentals, or crops.

Infested trees or ornamentals are easily noticed by the underside of the leaves. There you can find the white powdery web like from the whiteflies. Whiteflies can be seen by the naked eye. They will appear to be similar to a moth by their features and wings. However, they are more related to scales than moths. The pest will appear to have a fine white powdery wax on their bodies. The color of the whitefly will vary by the type of species; some will be greenish and others may appear to be transparent.

The damage to trees and ornamental are caused by the way the whitefly eats from the plant. They have piercing-sucking mouth parts in which they use to puncture the plant and consume the plant juices. Keep an eye out for leaves that are becoming pale or spotted due to this pests feeding on the underside of the leaves. Beside from their consumption of the plant juices, whiteflies leave behind a sticky substance called honeydew. Honeydew provides the perfect environment for growth of a fungus called sooty mold.  This fungus will cause the leaf to turn black and can interfere with the photosynthesis of the plant causing early leaf dropping and delayed growth. Honeydew will also attract other pests that can potential cause further harm to the plant.
