Lawn Care requires a thorough understanding of all your turf grass needs.

Over watering is a big problem for Florida lawns. Residents often over water thinking the more water the lawn gets the greener, WRONG! Providing too much water to your turf grass will cause it to have a shallow root system. This is when the roots are only a few inches under the soil. The favorable depth should be around a foot. Over watering will also increase the likelihood of weeds, disease like brown patch disease (rhizoctonia brown patch), and insects.

Your lawn will begin to show signs of need for irrigation. Here are a few signs:proper irrigation, water management

  • Grass leaf blades will fold in half lengthwise. Your grass does this to try to minimize leaf area and water loss.
  • Grass will turn a Blue-grayish color. A lawn that is in need of water turns blue-gray rather than green.
  • Footprints or tire marks remain visible. It means that the grass is dry and is not springing back.

According to the University of Florida IFAS department, a typical Florida lawn should only receive 1/2′” – ¾” of water when your grass is more that 30-50% wilting or dry. Unless if rain is in the forecast then allow Mother Nature to water your lawn. An easy way to tell if you’re using the correct amount of water is to place empty open tuna cans in reach of the sprinkler. Turn on the irrigation system for 30 minutes. Once time is up, measure the amount of water in the can. It shouldn’t be more than ¾” deep.

Turf Grass

Many residents of South Florida are faced with watering restrictions each year. This makes homeowners tempted to water their lawn more for each application. Not only will this harm your lawn, it will harm Florida’s environment. This is causing pollution by washing insecticides or fertilizer into the groundwater.

It is very important in South Florida to not over water your lawn. Florida turf needs to be able to rely on a deep root system in times of severe drought. It also depends on deep root systems to become a healthy lawn. Watering less for longer periods of time will encourage your grass to be more drought-tolerate.

The best tip for having a healthy lawn and a properly watered lawn is only water when it needs it and water it at a rate the soil can absorb.

Here are some more tips to help you maintain a moist healthy grass.

Apply Mulch

It is smart to apply mulch in flower beds and around trees or shrubs. The mulch helps keep the soil moist and it will help reduce weed growth.

Watering Times

Only use your irrigation system at certain times. Early morning or late evenings are favorable times because the temperature is cooler and less wind activity. This helps prevent water loss through evaporation.

Set Timer on Irrigation System

By setting the timer on your irrigation system, you can save about 10-20% on your water bill. This will also allow you to have your lawn watered at appropriate times.

Make good use of Rain

Instead of having rainwater fall into a gutter, point it towards an area of plants, trees, shrubs, or even your grass as long as it does not cause a washout of your soil. A rain barrel is becoming popular in South Florida. It is a great way to save water for drought.

Do NOT Mow your Grass Short

Grass that is allowed to grow higher will have a more widespread root system. The deeper your root system is, the higher your grass’s tolerance will be for dry spells. When grass is mowed short, it causes the grass to use most of its energy to grow new leaf blades rather than a root system.
